Q: What is Modern Calligraphy?

A: Modern calligraphy is any calligraphy style that does not follow the rules of traditional calligraphy scripts. Copperplate, Spencerian and Italic, to name a few. Although it relies on some basic principles of traditional calligraphy, modern calligraphy is generally a lot more free and expressive, and can be written using more than one medium. Common tools used in modern calligraphy include pointed nibs, brush pens and even watercolour brushes.

Q: I do not have pretty handwriting. Will I be suitable to learn Modern Calligraphy?

This is a common misconception. One does not need to have beautiful handwriting to write beautiful calligraphy. Although calligraphy is often described as decorative handwriting, it has nothing to do with how your actual handwriting with a pen/pencil is.

You also do not need to have previous experience in calligraphy to join our workshops. Our workshops are designed for beginners. We also welcome anyone who has dabbled in calligraphy before and are seeking a more structured environment to take their calligraphy skills further.

Q: What will I learn in the Modern Calligraphy Workshop?

A: Working through the workbooks provided, we will first start with understanding the basic principles of modern calligraphy, a brief introduction to your tools, how to set up your calligraphy pen (for pointed pen workshops). Then we delve into the drills and basic strokes, understanding the letterforms, before progressing to writing words. We always aim to let our participants have some free writing time at the end of the workshop so you can put together what was learnt and try creating something of your very own.

Q: What is included in the Modern Calligraphy Workshop?

A: Our Modern Calligraphy Workshop comes with a kit that will be used during the workshop, and available for you to take home for more practice. The list of materials supplied in the kit are below:

• 2-in-1 calligraphy pen holder

• 2 pointed nibs

• Our very own Modern Calligraphy Basics workbook, which consists of 20+ pages of practices

• Sumi ink and ink jar

• PDF Blank Guidelines Practice Sheet which will be sent to you after the workshop

During the workshop, as we go through the workbook I will first give an overview of the segment we are in. Following that, I will go around providing individual feedback to the participants while the rest of the group are doing the practices.

Light refreshments will also be provided at the workshop.

Q: What do I have to bring?

Absolutely nothing! All materials are provided and we will also serve light refreshments at our workshops. You only need to bring yourself and perhaps your phone to take photos of your beautiful progress :)
