Hand Engraving: What’s all the fuss about?

Personalised engraving services have been around for many years. In recent times, hand engraving calligraphy styles have been gaining popularity, as many calligraphers take to the hand-held engraving tool to help you turn special moments into everlasting memories.

How is hand-engraving done?

Traditionally, most engraving is done on jewellery such as rings or pendants. These are achieved using either a laser engraving machine, or hand-cut using a chisel.

At our studio in Perth, Western Australia, all engraving requests are completed using a hand-held engraving tool and burrs. Holding the electric burr like we would with a pen, we are able to engrave our signature calligraphy scripts onto surfaces and achieve a more organic look than with a laser machine.

This also means our engraving service is highly customisable and there is greater freedom to design ideas.

What surfaces can be engraved on?

Many surfaces are suitable for hand engraving, ranging from glass, gloss coated ceramic, acrylic, stainless steel and marble surfaces.

Make it as unique as you want

Since launching our hand engraving service offering, we have completed requests for a wide range of occasions and products. If you are looking for some ideas to elevate your gift-giving, you will want to read on.

The most popular requests we receive are wedding related, focusing on items for the day-of such as bride and groom fragrances, mother of the bride, father of the bride, mother of the groom and father of the groom gifts.

Personalised engraving on champagne flutes for your bridal party is a brilliant way to celebrate your big day and make your bridal party feel extra special.

Not a champagne drinker? Beer glasses and whisky glasses also look great with a bit of personalisation. These make wonderful additions to your groomsmen boxes

How about getting your cake knife engraved so you can look back on fond memories everytime you use it?

Lipsticks and compact mirrors can also be engraved on!

Birthdays, celebratory events such as graduation and corporate awards are also popular gifting occasions we have engraved for.

And the list goes on.

Word of caution

Although glass surfaces are suitable for hand engraving, we do not recommend engraving on pressurized bottles (e.g. Champagne, Sparkling wines).

This is because engraving compromises the integrity of unopened pressurized bottles and poses a risk of explosion for the engraver, client and receiver. Our studio frequently receives engraving requests on pressurized bottles but it is highly not recommended.

For this reason, our studio does not engrave on pressurized bottles.
